A 2022 global poll found that Singapore is the top country in the world for daily hair washing. While the good people of Australia were shamefully not included, you’ve probably heard more than your fair share of opinions on how often is optimal.

The no-poo philosophy had a moment a few years back, and plenty of people swear by a quick rinse every day. Head online, and you’ll find it’s as hotly debated as what shampoo and hair treatments you should use.

So what’s the answer? Let’s consult some experts and end this argument once and for all.

Over to the Experts

When it comes to skin and hair care, few people know what they’re talking about more than the Australasian College of Dermatologists. They recommend using shampoo every one to three days.

Now, that’s not a set rule. They mention two additional important factors to consider – how greasy your hair is and how often you work out.

Greasy Hair Needs Extra Care

Experts agree that for healthy hair, people whose hair is naturally greasy should wash it more often. The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that people with greasy hair shampoo daily.

Interestingly, this may change as you age. As we get older, the scalp may produce less oil. So while you may have needed to shampoo your hair every day in your twenties, this may not be the case by your fifties.

Dry or Treated Hair

Some people have naturally dry and brittle hair. While afro hair has incredible tensile strength, its curls can make it vulnerable to breakage without proper care.

Chemical hair treatments can also dry the hair out. Therefore, if either of the above applies to you, it may be better to wash your hair less frequently. This could be as infrequently as once a week.

Hair That’s in Between

Hair that’s neither overly oily or dry allows you a little more flexibility. Typically, you can wash it every two or three days to keep it clean and looking good. However, pay close attention to how it looks so you can adjust accordingly.

The Dirty Hair Rule

Our hair faces a lot on an average day. Sweat and oil from the scalp combine with dust and pollution in the air to weigh it down. This brings us to the dirty hair rule – always wash dirty hair.

A quick look in the mirror is often enough to confirm what you’re already feeling. Don’t worry about hair type and when you last washed it. If it’s dirty, get out the shampoo and conditioner and give it some love.

The Bottom Line: To Wash or Not to Wash?

How often you should wash your hair depends on your hair type and lifestyle. But whether you wash it every day or once a week, it’s important to use great quality shampoo and hair treatments.
